ZAR32 is a Windows version of ZAR data recovery suite. It utilizes some sophisticated algorithms unavailable in DOS versions.
Partition Magic is an extremely sophisticated tool. It is possible that it hangs, sometimes you can mistakenly reboot it thinking hung (instead of just being busy), or a power outage can occur in the middle of an operation. Data recovery is very difficult if Partition Magic was interrupted. Copy your data to another disk (borrow one from someone if you need to) and use FDISK (or Disk Administrator under Windows NT) for repartitioning. If Partition Magic is the only option available, back up your data.
Can ZAR32 recover my files if the MBR is damaged?
ZAR32 can still recover files even if the MBR is missing. Please see the help file for more details on this.
S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. = "Self Monitoring And Reporting Technology". It is a standard interface that allows disk to check its status, report it to a host system, and provide some estimate of a failure date.
T.E.C.
T.E.C. stands for "Threshold Exceeded Condition" and basically means a failure. When your S.M.A.R.T. control tool reports a "T.E.C. date" or "Nearest T.E.C. predicted" it really means "Failure date".
